She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling place.
And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Oh! I guessed it! Lord Byron. It probably wasn't that hard to guess but I'm VERY proud of myself right now. Thanks for posting this beautiful poem Naida!
I've always loved this poem, but it's many years since I've read it. Thanks for the reminder!
A very lovely poem :)
Beautiful.
I love this line:
Of cloudless climes and starry skies
And I like how peaceful night images appear now and then in the rest of the poem: raven tresses and "tints that glow" which makes me think of the moon glowing.
A heart whose love is innocent!
Is he basically saying here that she doesn't feel for him romantically, but instead has a pure platonic love?
Beautiful poem Naida. Thank you.
johanna: lol...yes...Lord Byron. Glad you enjoyed it.
natalie: It's been a while since I read this one as well, and I had forgotten about it.
dar, blod and petty: glad you enjoyed this one ladies.
hkatz: isn't that great how he refers to night images that way?
'that tender light'
Well, for me he means she is good and pure because:
'But tell of days in goodness spent' and 'A mind at peace'
But then again, I think poetry really is up to the reader to interpret it.
thanks for commenting everyone.
That is very lovely.
Hope it's OK if I jump back into your romance challenge. When I was having blog problems, I was going to just give up on the whole thing (blog, challenges, etc). I know I told you I wouldn't be participating, but now that I've decided to give the blog another try, I'd like to rejoin if I may.
Thanks!
So beautiful!!
glad you like this one Suko :)
Elizabeth: of course, glad you are joining after all.

jenny: I agree..*sigh*
Thank you for such a beautiful poem and love artwork by Waterhouse, one of my favorite Pre-Raphaelite artists.
Hi Denise :) Glad you enjoyed this post. Waterhouse is a favorite of mine as well.
